Moenninghoff type 450 friction clutches are double flux pole face designs without friction material.  They are resistant to oil and water which suits them to mobile applications such as diesel power take-offs, compressor and pump disconnect clutches and agricultural machinery.

Friction is generated from steel to steel pole faces that are wear free within thermal limits.  Torque is transmitted dynamically with high speeds possible and without backlash. Clutch couplings and special designs are possible.

How they work

Clutches are engaged by applying a DC voltage, normally 24V, to a stationary coil.  This creates magnetic flux in the steel rotating body (rotor).  The magnetic flux attracts the armature plate through the air gap and into contact with the rotor where friction is generated.

A special rotor design together with a two piece armature causes the magnetic flux to cross the air gap twice.  This is sometimes called ‘double flux crossed’.

Twice the engagement force is created leading to high torque and small dimensions.

A flat spring on the back of the armature gives a free release when the DC voltage is removed.  Also it achieves backlash free torque transmission.

Engagement and performance limits

The friction surfaces are gas nitrided and wear is virtually zero provided the conditions meet limits for engagement speed, energy and frequency of operation.  Generally these clutches should have slip times less than 1 second.  Guidance is given in the product catalogue.

Minor contamination of the surfaces will be quickly burnt off.  Continuous running in oil or water is possible but torques will fall by up to 75%.

Options

Clutches with flange mounted coils requiring minimum axial space, need integration into machine design.

Clutches with bearing mounted coils are easier to mount.

Clutch couplings for in-line drives, usually with type 313 Hexaflex rubber disc couplings, ideal for diesel drives as vibrations are damped.
