Ball screws for precise linear motion

Rolled & whirled ball screws 16 to 100mm

Servomech ball screws are manufactured in-house with high precision to international standards ISO3408 and DIN69051.  Accuracy grades are IT3 suitable for general transport duties, IT5 for positioning and IT3 with machine tool precision.  Different pitches from 5 to 40 mm are held on stock for short delivery times.  End dimensions can be customised lengths up to 5.7m are possible.

Production and Quality

Two different production processes are used to manufacture accuracy grades IT7 to IT3

Rolling - this is a plastic deformation process where the thread is formed by pressure from large dies.  After rolling the screw is hardened and polished.  Accuracy grades IT7 and IT5 are possible depending on the screw diameter.
Whirling is a modern machining process that produces accuracy close to grinding but with higher production speed and therefore lower cost.  The thread is cut by ceramic tools that are rotated at high speed.  The cutting ‘chips’ take away the heat leaving the screw cool and helping to achieve high accuracy.  Whirling produces accuracy grades IT5 and IT3.

The whirling process is established production technology that is regularly used for the manufacture of precision screws.  Some suppliers describe their process as grinding when in fact it is whirling because the resultant quality is similar in both cases.

Machining of screw ends
Generally  lengths of ball screw cut from stock material require customised ends for fixing and  bearing support.  This should be done at the factory as the screws are shipped in a hardened form.  You can specify plain diameters, grooves and keyways

Scope

Steel ball screws in 42/50 CrMo4 with hardness 58-61 Hrc.  Chrome plating on request
Diameters 16 to 100mm
Pitches 5 to 40mm
Lengths up to 5.7m
Accuracy grades IT7 up to IT3

International standards

ISO3408 and DIN 69051 define the screw accuracy and nominal dimensions for screw and nut.  As a general guide, the performance of systems manufactured with the same accuracy grades to these standards will be very similar. However individual components will not be interchangeable.

Making it easy

We aim to make the selection and ordering process as easy as possible.  From your application data we make a preliminary assessment before referring it to the factory.
A visit to your site is made if necessary.
Based on the factory recommendation we will make a proposal that is technically correct for

speeds
forces
accuracy
duty
lifetime
environment

This process allows us to optimise the selection from the number of starts and the nut types available.

2D and 3D CAD drawings can be provided.

You have no need to make selection calculations although if you wish to do so guidance is given in our catalogue download
