INTORQ spring applied electromagnetic brakes are normally engaged and are released by DC voltage applied to the coil. Braking is by dry friction in a range 0.1 to 2400Nm. They are used for dynamic stopping and holding duties in a wide range of industrial machinery, particularly in safety critical industrial applications such as brake motors, cranes, hoists, fork lifts, wind turbines and medical machinery. INTORQ brakes have previously used Lenze and Simplatroll brand names. Most common models are the BFK457 and BFK458 brakes
Spring applied brakes (sometimes known as safety brakes) are used for the dynamic stopping and holding of loads. When the supply power is off, the brake is on. Brake release occurs when a dc current of 12 to 205V is applied to the coil creating a magnetic force that opens the brake. This type of brake is commonly found in the brake motors. A manual release can be fitted.
Spring applied brakes give a high level of safety and B10 data is available to aid the assessment of the safety levels in industrial machinery. Safety is achieved through the brake design, the multiple springs and the quality of materials and machining. However ultimately no brake can give safe operations if incorrectly maintained. For use in sensitive industrial applications such as passenger lifts, special brake designs with increased safety are available.

The BFK458 is a modular range of single disc friction brakes with electromagnetic release. There is a wide range of options including adjustable brake torque, manual release, microswitches and high environmental protection.
The BFK 458 brake is known worldwide with millions in service in many safety critical applications such as cranes, lifts and hoists. Other industrial uses include brake motors, wind turbines and powered carriages. The single brake disc has friction materials on both sides and operates under dry conditions.
INTORQ type BFK468
The BFK468 brakes use multiple coils to achieve a higher density of magnetic flux which generates higher torques in a given size. Switching times are fast due to low inductance.

INTORQ caliper brakes are designed to brake rotating discs.
INTORQ type BFK471
Developed for port and marine applications, the BFK471 is enclosed to IP66 including the manual release. 750Nm is achieved with one brake disc, 1500Nm with two.

INTORQ spares and service are available in the UK through Techdrives and our regional distributors. Brakes used dynamically will wear and often the friction disc (rotor) will need to be replaced.
